Ingrown Hairs and Folliculitis

7th June 2021

Do you find that you suffer from Ingrown hairs or do you go all pimply after you have gotten waxed or have shaved?

Ingrown hairs can be itchy and uncomfortable, especially if you've got a lot of them. You may notice pus inside the bumps. Or you may see the hair that's causing the problem.

In men, ingrown hairs often pop up as a bunch of little bumps on the chin, cheeks, or neck after shaving.

In women, ingrown hairs are common on the legs, as well as in the pubic area and armpits.

Anyone can get an ingrown hair but the problem is more common in people who have very curly or coarse hair. Curly hair is more likely to bend back and re-enter the skin, especially after it's been shaved or cut.

Here are some handy hints to help you reduce your chances of getting ingrown hairs.

  • Ensure that you are moisturizing your skin in between your waxing appointments
  • Invest in an exfoliating mitten – these are great to use to exfoliate your skin in between treatments (however allow 2 days after waxing for your skin to recover)
  • Do not squeeze your ingrown hairs as this can cause bacteria to spread underneath the surface of your skin and create scars or further spread infection.
  • If you find you do get Folliculitis (these are like little pimples and generally occur after waxing) you can use and antibacterial cream to help reduce the infection in the hair follicle.
  • Try not to sweat afterwards – avoid swimming and working out as this can cause folliculitis
  • A good Vitamin A serum can also be used on the area once or twice a week as this helps with cell turnover in the skin (make sure you do not use within 2/3 days of your waxing appointment however)
  • Lip waxing – a lot of people find they get Folliculitis on their top lips after waxing if these are popped or squeezed then this in turn spreads the bacteria on the face and can cause the bacteria to spread in the recently waxed area.

My personal favorite for combatting this is Zovirax – or using any other cream that has Acyclovir in it.
